The monument was designed by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen and cut into the cliff by Lukas Ahorn.

Around ten metres long, the relief sits above a still pool that mirrors the rock — a deliberate touch that deepens its solemn, reflective mood.

Above the lion, a Latin inscription reads "Helvetiorum Fidei ac Virtuti" — "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss."
